All students—no matter their native language—stand to benefit from dual language immersion programs.
In dual language immersion (DLI), native Spanish or Mandarin speakers and native English speakers maintain and develop their first language while acquiring native-like communication and literacy skills in a second language. Academic content is taught and assessed in two languages over an extended period of time.
At Pine Street School, Students have 2 teachers in the classroom, each working in English or Spanish/Mandarin in small groups, all day long. About 50% of a student's day is in the target language, however, due to small group teaching and individualized learning plans, the rate of language learning is higher than a standard language immersion program. Due to the brain friendly, research based language teaching practices, children quickly begin to understand, learn new skills and take risks with language.
