The International Baccalaureate, best known for its rigorous Diploma program, has a continuum of education for students aged 3-18. Pine Street School is authorized to offer the prestigious Primary Years Program for students in Preschool through Grade 5.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed to foster the development of the whole child. It provides a world-class curriculum for primary schools around the globe. The IB is globally recognized for its effectiveness and innovation.
The most significant and distinctive feature of the Primary Years Programme are the six transdisciplinary themes.
The PYP is guided by six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who we are.
- Where we are in place and time.
- How we express ourselves.
- How the world works.
- How we organize ourselves.
- Sharing the planet.
These themes are selected for their relevance to the real world. They are described as transdisciplinary because they focus on issues that go across subject areas.
The transdisciplinary themes help teachers to develop a program of inquiry. Teachers work together to develop investigations into important ideas, which require a substantial and high level of involvement on the part of students.
Montessori and International Baccalaureate are naturals together at Pine Street School. The basic elements of both programs complement each other seamlessly. Where the Montessori method engages a child’s genuine enthusiasm for learning, IB PYP takes that mindset and gives it wings – bringing it out onto the global landscape.
